Harper’s Journey – From Scared Shelter Pup to Beloved Family Member

Some dogs walk into our lives and change everything. Harper is one of those dogs. From her earliest days as a timid, fragile rescue pup to a confident and deeply loved companion, her story is one of resilience, patience, and the unbreakable bond she shares with her moms.

A Story of Second Chances

Harper’s journey began at Goochland Animal Shelter, where she arrived scared, underweight, and suffering from mange. She didn’t know it yet, but her future moms were already falling in love with her. Both were volunteers at the shelter, each spending time with her separately, unaware that their hearts were being tugged in the same direction.

When Harper became available for adoption, there was no hesitation—she was meant to be theirs. They named her Harper because it just fit, and on February 6, 2022, her "Gotcha Day," she officially became part of their family.

Harper’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. She was once a “scaredy cat,” unsure of new situations, but with time, patience, and love, she’s found her confidence. Now, she thrives on adventure—whether it’s sniffing her way through a park, perching on stumps for a better view, or digging in her very own sandbox (a gift from her moms after she took a little too much interest in their garden!).

But Harper’s true happy place? Snuggled between her moms, especially during morning coffee time, where she curls up between their legs and drifts into a cozy nap. It’s these moments—the quiet, everyday expressions of love—that make their bond so special.

When we planned Harper’s session, her moms weren’t sure if a fun, candid family portrait would work out. They knew Harper could be anxious around new people, and the camera might feel a little intimidating. But Harper surprised us all showing her true colors—her joy, her loyalty, her deep love for her family, and enthusiasm for new adventures, right out the gate!

In the end, their session resulted in a stunning statement piece and a portrait box filled with memories that tell Harper’s story in the most beautiful way. The artwork they chose isn’t just décor for the walls—it’s a reminder of how far Harper has come and how much love she brings into their lives every single day.

Harper’s moms say she’s coming out of her shell more and more every day. She’s recently hiked some Afton Mountain Trails and enjoyed her stay at dog friendly B&Bs. But, in true Harper fashion, there still is no place like home for her though, where she can hunt for moles, zoomie around the backyard, and snuggle up with her favorite people.

PS: Is your pup a little nervous at first like Harper? I get it — I make sure to always run the session according to your dog’s comfort level and will never for a “let’s be friends” encounter. We go at their pace; and I’m probably going to just ignore them at first meeting. I’ll work with a longer lens to keep some distance and let them take the lead to come up to me on their terms. By the end of our time together, we’ve usually become fast friends.
